Who we are

SELECT is the trade association for the electrical contracting industry in Scotland.

Founded in 1900 as The Electrical Contractors’ Association of Scotland, it was the first trade association in the world to serve the electrical industry. Today, it is Scotland’s largest construction trade association and one of the oldest to represent the ‘modern’ trades.

SELECT has around 1,250 Member businesses, each working to stringent membership criteria and accredited to one or more of ten technical disciplines. These Member companies have a collective turnover of around £1 billion, and provide employment for 15,000 people and 3,500 apprentices.

SELECT delivers training courses to more than 3,500 electricians each year and is a not-for-profit organisation, with all income invested in services for Members. Watch our film here.

Supporting our Members

To help our Members thrive, we provide a broad range of services and benefits, including technical advice, health and safety guidance and employment information.

Because the future is electric, we listen closely to our Members’ needs and constantly review and update our services to keep pace with technological developments and the ever-changing market.

Representing the industry

As the authoritative voice of the Scottish electrotechnical industry, we help to shape the sector, lobbying government to reflects the views and requirements of our Members.

We also help set and monitor industry standards, including the BS 7671 Wiring Regulations, and participate in a wide range of technical, regulatory and industrial relations negotiations.

Protecting the public

Every SELECT Member undergoes a rigorous and regular technical assessment to ensure that their work is safe and installed to recognised industry standards.

Membership of SELECT gives the public confidence that they are dealing with a quality contractor, backed by a code of practice which includes a complaint resolution and disciplinary procedure.

For further peace of mind, we also operate a contract completion guarantee scheme and are committed to regulation of the industry to maintain the highest standards and keep Scotland safe.
