Building Standards Division of the Scottish Government (BSD)

Scottish Ministers are responsible for creating Building Regulations and preparing technical guidance to ensure buildings are safe, efficient and sustainable for all and the Building Standards Division (BSD) is the department which fulfills this function.

The Building (Scotland) Act 2003 introduced a Building Standards system for Scotland that raised the standards and simplified the approval of many construction activities for the public, Verifiers (local authorities) and the industry.

The Building Standards legislation also provided for the appointment of Approved Certifiers of Design and Approved Certifiers of Construction. Properly qualified professionals can become Certifiers and have the authority to certify work for building warrant purposes. SELECT operate a Certifier of Construction scheme for the electrical industry. Click here to visit the on-line register.
SBSC is an information portal for building standards certification. Information is provided on the benefits of becoming an Approved Certifier and having work certified in relation to building warrants and completion certificates. There are links to specific certification scheme websites for more information on work which can be certified and how to apply for scheme membership. www.sbsc.uk.net
